ALTERATION SEA POINT

Grobler Architects completed the original alterations to this 1960’s home 8 years before being approached by its new owners. Initially, we assisted with a master bathroom remodel but it eventually developed into a larger project.

Work to the street facade firstly includes a new roller shutter garage door to improve access and security. The demolition of an external storeroom now also allows enough off-street parking space for 2 cars. In addition, a concrete roof slab added above a new pedestrian gate protects guests from the weather. However, to improve protection the gate is set back flush with timber wall cladding to give the street entrance a simple minimal appearance. From here, a landscaped route leads to the entrance with planted beds and natural paving. Steel and timber pergolas are added as shading for off-street parking and to soften the route to the house. Lastly, newly designed steel and fluted glass gates installed for privacy and a new pool reconfigured increasing the size of the garden.

Internally the existing Study area has been adjusted and we have added new joinery for extra storage. An existing freestanding fireplace to the Living area has been replaced with new waxed blackened steel-clad joinery and floating fireplace. In addition, a mirrored glass bay window with bronze cladding has been added to the bedroom facing the street.

On the roof level the previous garden has been re-landscaped with selected indigenous vegetation. A new glass and steel Sunroom added to the roof allows the owners to enjoy the amazing views over the ocean. In addition, this space allows for three glass walls to slide open to connect the inside and outside. Finally, custom-made sliding aluminium shutters were added externally controlling the sunlight and temperature of the space.
